License and Permit Checklist to Start a Trucking Business

For a start-up trucking company, it can be a struggle to work your way around the various government guidelines for trucking companies. Here is the checklist of the necessary steps that will help you gain authority and operate legally as a trucking company in the US.

Obtain a Commercial Driver’s License

All drivers of your company require valid commercial driver's licenses to operate heavy trucks (CDLs). A comprehensive background check, CDL preparation, a written permit exam, and a driving test are included in obtaining a license. You must be at least 18 years old to be eligible for a CDL. To drive a truck from state to state, you must be at least 21. CD testing requirements vary from state to state so it is better to check with your local department of motor vehicle office regarding your state requirements.

Apply for Your Federal DOT and MCA Numbers

For your trucking business to haul freight in the United States, federal dot and Motor Carrier Authority numbers are needed. To track the safety record of the business and comply with the regulations, the USDOT number is used. Whereas the motor carrier or MC identifies the kind of trucking company you conduct and the kinds of goods you are licensed to transport. You can get both numbers by registering your company with the FMCSA. You can visit the FMCSA website.

Complete Your UCR

To check active insurance coverage in each state where a motor carrier operates, the UCR system was developed. You must log in using the USDOT and MC numbers of your business.

Get an International Registration Plan or IRP plate

An IRP license plate issued by the home state of the business enables your vehicle to work in all states, as well as most provinces in Canada. A yearly renewal charge is expected for the plate.

Know Heavy Use Tax Regulations

The federal heavy-highway vehicle use tax refers to any truck that weighs 55,000 pounds or more. You must complete and file a 2290 tax form with the IRS on an annual basis to pay taxes owed on your heavy trucks.

Obtain an IFTA Decal

To simplify the monitoring of fuel used by trucks traveling around the lower 48 U.S. states and several Canadian provinces, the IFTA agreement was established. The law encourages your business to have a single fuel license and requires you to file tax returns on quarterly fuel use with the state where you are based.

Get A Standard Carrier Alpha Code (SCAC)

SCAC is a privately regulated code used to distinguish various transport companies. You would require obtaining a SCAC code if you intend to haul military, government, foreign or intermodal loads.

File a BOC-3 Form

Registering an up-to-date BOC-3 form with the FMCSA is one condition for securing an interstate operating authority.

State Licenses and Permits

You can rely on your business practices and your position for the permits and licenses from the State, County, or Region. Your licensing fees for your company can differ too.

States are more inclined than federals to control a larger variety of practices. For example, local auctioning, building and dry-cleaning, planting, plumbing, restaurants, retail, and sales equipment are widely supervised practices.

For a certain amount of time, certain certificates and permits lapse. Follow closely when you decide to update them replacement sometimes is easier than request.

You may need to look at your laws for the region, county, and community. The demands of the industry also differ according to the state. To find out what permits and licenses you to require, check the Global Multi Services of your province.

If you are enthusiastic about opening up a new venture, the requirement for licenses and permits can be easily forgotten. It is so enjoyable to receive licenses and certificates as to see the dentist. However one of the more important errors that young entrepreneurs create is that they are not willing to do that right from the outset.

License for Company Truck

Contact the department of your city's licensing so that you can figure out how to get a business license that effectively allows you the ability to run a truck in that city after you pay a charge, naturally. Like us, some city plan or zoning agencies verifies that the location is zoned to the reason to which you choose to use it and adequate space is accessible for parking to satisfy the codes when you request your license application.

Conclusion

People of some fields require permits or qualified licenses in certain countries. Many countries must go through exams before these licenses can be issued and trucks used. In certain countries, vehicles, plumbers, electricians, architects, collectors, insurance companies, real estate brokers, repossessors, and anybody offering personal services are needed by license (i.e., barbers, cosmetologists, doctors, and nurses). Please email Global Multi Services for a detailed list of licensed jobs.

IRP Plates And IRP Plates Renewal

IRP means International Registration Number. IRP plates are designed for Truckings. As per the US and Canada's jurisdictions in 1994, it is necessary to have IRP plates for the vehicles operating in two or more states for commercial activities against paying specific fees. Though, no state has the same taxes. The calculations are done based on the base state. The company owners are bound to pay taxes annually for each jurisdiction to avoid hefty penalties.

Who can register under IRP?

IRP is mandatory for all commercial truck operating companies. However, it is a one-time process. But, it allows you to operate your trucks for commercial purposes in different states without any hassle. IRP plate is issued to the truck operators as a license to run their operations smoothly in more than one state. A fixed registration fee is charged for giving IRP plate that is determined based on base state. For example, an 80,000 lbs. truck registered under 48 lower states will have to pay around $1500 to $2000 as the license fee. Their vehicles that can register under IRP require to follow the below guidelines.

1.       If the vehicle's GVW (Gross Vehicle Weight) is more than 26,000 lbs.

2.       If your vehicle has three or more axles, irrespective of GVM.

3.       Or, your vehicle's weight is over 26,000 lbs. when it is combined with GVM.

However, the government-regulated offices, the buses used for chartered parties, and the vehicles operating intrastate miles are exempted under IRP regulation.

IRP Plates

Renewal Of IRP Plates

The renewal of IRP plates is required every year. The renewal notice is sent to the truck operators with the penalty information, including actual mileage and the renewal date scheduled before 30 to 45 days before the expiration date. Global Multi Services ensure that you get existing reports about expenses, invoices, dispatches, mileage, IRP payment, and IFTA.
