IRP means International Registration Number. IRP plates are designed for Truckings. As per the US and Canada's jurisdictions in 1994, it is necessary to have IRP plates for the vehicles operating in two or more states for commercial activities against paying specific fees. Though, no state has the same taxes. The calculations are done based on the base state. The company owners are bound to pay taxes annually for each jurisdiction to avoid hefty penalties.
Who can register under IRP?
IRP is mandatory for all commercial
truck operating companies. However, it is a one-time process. But, it allows
you to operate your trucks for commercial purposes in different states without
any hassle. IRP plate is issued to the truck operators as a license to run
their operations smoothly in more than one state. A fixed registration fee is
charged for giving IRP plate that is determined based on base state. For
example, an 80,000 lbs. truck registered under 48 lower states will have to pay
around $1500 to $2000 as the license fee. Their vehicles that can register
under IRP require to follow the below guidelines.
1. If
the vehicle's GVW (Gross Vehicle Weight) is more than 26,000 lbs.
2. If
your vehicle has three or more axles, irrespective of GVM.
3. Or,
your vehicle's weight is over 26,000 lbs. when it is combined with GVM.
However, the government-regulated
offices, the buses used for chartered parties, and the vehicles operating
intrastate miles are exempted under IRP regulation.

The renewal of IRP plates is
